The area's economy is ased mainly upon the cultivation of walnuts, hazelnuts and olives as well as grapes, grain and citrus fruit. bovine are also bred locally. Although much historical data is missing, we know that the citadel was already in existence in the 9th century and that it was dominated by the Arabs who occupied the portion still named after them, "Arabite". Ruggero d'Altavilla liberated it and since 1320 it became the property of the heirs of Giovanni
Manna.
The palazzo is also of architectural interest are the Chiesa
di Santa Maria with its 17th century. panelled ceiling and its 16th cent. front elevation. An archway connects this to the bell tower in baroque style. Also, the Convent
of Carmelitani Calzati and the Chiesa del Carmine which can be found right next door to it. Within this church the marble Madonna executed by Gagini (1478-1536) can be admired.
Of importance is also the palazzo Baronale dei Moncada which still has its own prison quarters below ground level.
